What are Mindsets and How to Change Them

Are you wanting to feel more fulfilled in life? Do you suffer from mom guilt when you take time for yourself? Is your relationship with your partner suffering because it’s put on a backburner while you’re mommying? Do you want to change all of that?

Change your mindset.

Changing your mindset will help bring you happiness and flourish all of your relationships. It takes work, but it is worth putting the time and effort in.

So, what exactly are mindsets?

What are Mindsets?

Mindsets are a person’s way of thinking and beliefs that help mold who they are and the world around them. Mindsets are attributed to how negative or positive situations arise and are handled.

Types

There are two types of mindset: fixed and growth.

Fixed Mindset: People who believe their intelligence, talents, and personalities are fixed traits. They believe they were born with certain skills that are unable to improve over time.

Growth Mindset: People who believe their talents can be developed through hard work, good strategies and input from others. They value setbacks because they view them as part of the learning process.

Fixed MindsetGrowth Mindset
I don’t have what it takes to reach my goals.I can learn the skills I need to reach my goals.
I can’t fail if I don’t try.When I fail, what lesson(s) am I learning?
My house will always be a mess.I will schedule my time better to better serve me and my family.
My kids will never eat what I cook.I will have patience with my kids as they try new foods

Why is Mindset Important

What you think matters. If you think negatively, then negative things will manifest in your life. And the opposite is true. If you think positively, then positive things will manifest in your life.

The saying “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me” is absolutely false! Words shape your thoughts and beliefs, especially when your emotions are involved.

Your Life is as Good as Your Mindset

Mindset has to be worked on continually. What you believe will manifest in your life. By changing your mindset, you will notice an increase in quality of life.

How to Change Mindset and Attitude

Brain priming:

The way you talk to yourself is the most important and effective thing you can do to change your mindset. You can do that by implementing brain priming.

What is brain priming? It is defined as taking time to adjust your thoughts and emotions so you can live your life in your peak state.

This is hard to do because we are taking something that is taking up space in our conscious mind and trying to rewire it to our subconscious so we don’t have to take time to think about it. We want positive thinking to ourselves to become a part of who we are.

For example: Think of when you were learning how to drive a car. While you were learning, you were using your conscious mind to make sure you didn’t crash. You were thinking where to put your hands, which pedals were which, how to change lanes, etc.

Now think about the last time you drove. Were you actively thinking about which pedal was the gas and brake? How to check your blind spot so you could change lanes safely? Or were you more on autopilot, not really thinking about it? My guess is it is the latter.

That is exactly what we want to do with positive thinking about ourselves. We want it to be an automatic thing we do, not something we have to focus on. Once you get to the point where you’re constantly thinking nice thoughts about yourself, you will be a completely different person.

Affirmations:

Using affirmations can help you with brain priming. It helps to put affirmations up where you will see them often – kitchen, bathroom, family room, laptop, phone, etc. Affirmations can help you keep your focus, especially during hard times.

Journaling/reflecting:

I have a gratitude journal where I list 5 things I’m grateful for every day. There are days where I feel like I’m not grateful for anything. But when I actively look for the good in my life, I see that I am way more blessed than I thought. It helps turn a rough day around.

Small steps can lead to big results over time:

The last thing I want you to do is try and add all these things to your ever ending “To Do” list. I want you to start with one. Yes, only one. When you feel like you’ve mastered that one habit, then add another. You can’t do it all at once or I can almost guarantee that you will fail. So start small and remember that small steps every day lead to big results.

Give yourself grace:

Your mindset is not going to change overnight. It will take the time it takes. Be patient with yourself and trust the process. Just like babies, we have to take small steps. It’s once we’ve mastered taking small steps that we can learn how to run.

Mindset is Everything

Mindset affects every aspect of your life. If you are willing to change your mindset, then you can have the quality of life that you want. It is totally up to you. So what are you going to do?
